Means of Communication

Sending and receiving information or messages is called communication. Why do we communicate? We communicate to keep in touch with our friends and relatives. Through communication we can exchange our thoughts, ideas, feelings, opinions, or information among people. How do we communicate? There are various means of communication. We can communicate by writing, orally or by gestures. In older periods, people went on foot or on animals to deliver messages. Trained pigeons were also used to deliver messages to far away places. With advancement of science and technology more faster and reliable means of communication has been developed. Let’s learn more about Means of Communication. What Are Different Means of Communication?

The three main means of communication are – Postal Communication, Tele Communication and Mass Communication.

Postal Communication

In earlier days, postal communication was one of the cheapest and most popular means of communication. Postal system is used to send inland letters, post cards and stamped envelopes from one place to another. We can post our letter in a letter box which are then carried by rail, road, air or water transport to far away places. To sent letters or parcels quickly within one or two days we can use Speed Post service offered by the post offices or courier services offered by private agencies like Bluedart, DTDC, Gati, etc. To send urgent messages to someone within a few hours telegram services were used. In the year 2013, telegram services has been stopped in India.

Tele Communication

Telephone is the fastest means of communication. Telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell. Through telephone we can instantly talk to our relatives or friends in our own city, in another city. To make a call in another city we can make STD (Subscriber Trunk Dialing) and to make a call in foreign countries we can make ISD (International Subscriber Dialing) call. We can also send SMS (Short Message Service) instantly through our mobile phones. Fax machines are used to sent written messages instantly.
Computers and the Internet have made communication even more faster and efficient. We can use email services such as Gmail and Yahoo mail to send e-mails (electronic mails) instantly through internet.

Mass communication is a process in which a person, a group of people, or an organization sends a message through a channel of communication to a large number of people at the same time. For example, latest news about what is happening around the world is sent to large number of people through news papers, radio and television. These are called mass communication as they help to communicate with a large number of people around the world at the same time.
